CableSolve R5, the successor to the very popular CableSolve 2004, includes significant functionality, performance, stability, and usability enhancements to the CableSolve Server, Desktop, and Handheld.

Summary of the major new features and changes in R5:

On both Desktop and Handheld:

Enhanced user security. With the release of R5 CableSolve, administrators will be able to individually secure spaces (areas) within the database. This means that users can be restricted from viewing sensitive data. For instance, it is now possible to set-up sensitive areas such as computer rooms and data closets so that they can be viewed, but not touched or even not seen at all by
most users of CableSolve.

Significantly improved infrastructure and connectivity setup. on both the CableSolve Desktop and Handheld. Setting-up CableSolve is easier than ever, with the combination of desktop and handheld bulk set-up, imports and intelligent scanning, and movement of equipment on the handheld. Set-up time is reduced by up to 30%.

Improved batch connect. that correctly suggests the components that are to be connected together.

On the Handheld:

The handheld has been significantly re-written to provide greatly enhanced performance, security, functionality, and ease of use. These features include:

Auto-Advance. function when scanning multiple cables now includes audio prompts for a more rapid set-up.

Auto Sync when docked. CableSolve now has the option to automatically synchronise with the server when the Pocket PC is docked and active sync is used. With background syncing, you are assured that the handheld always contains the latest data.

Audit on the handheld is far 'smarter' and now manages a much wider range of situations. Both equipment and connections audit functions have been greatly enhanced.

  • Audit is now simpler and requires less keystroke, prompting the user for confirmation only when necessary; this includes the addition of Auto-Advance.
  • Audit discrepancies can now be resolved in one go, making the audit process faster and easier.
  • Audit advance mode has the ability to automatically create cables when unknown barcodes are seen.
  • Audit resolution better determines changes when only partial audits are performed.

Full undo and redo functions are now available on the handheld to undo mistakes and to redo some actions.

Conduit management has been improved to better support multiple connections and cables within sheaths and conduits to determine cable pathways and cable utilisation for maintenance and upgrade purposes.

The handheld will now automatically prompt to use equipment in a CableSolve storeroom when adding or moving equipment and components. This makes infrastructure set-up simple especially where bulk equipment creation or import has taken place on the desktop. It is also useful for equipment coming back from repair.

Multiple connections screens on the handheld mean up to a 24-fold reduction in set-up time for some devices.

Handheld synchronisation has been completely upgraded , some of the new features
include:

  • Synchronisation by space, allowing only selected data to be synchronised. This provides greater security for the most sensitive data, as well as better space and memory management on the handheld.
  • Synchronisation data is now password protected for added security.
  • Simplified basic set-up, with advanced set-up functions on grouped tabs.

Full support for secure and authenticated communication between the handheld and server. Including multiple Windows security authentication methods and encrypted databases.

Enhanced diagnostics, including specific troubleshooting messages to assist with chasing down any synchronisation issues that may arise.

Multiple database synchronisation. Useful for very large customers where there may be more than one CableSolve server.

Support for NVRAM, ensuring the CableSolve application and configuration is safe if the Pocket PC battery goes completely dead.

On the Desktop:

Imports have been improved. With R5, it is now possible to set-up an entire CableSolve system from imported Excel sheets. For large or existing sites, this can cut data entry by up to 80%. A real time saver.

The wizards in R5 now support more complex and flexible naming conventions when adding multiple components, again making set-up, and more importantly, on-going management easier.

Exports have been improved to support a wider range of export capabilities, allowing the export and re-import of entire spaces.

Enhanced reports to provide real management of the IT infrastructure, cabling, and IT assets. Reports to show history and current usage are also included.

Numerous small usability enhancements, including re-ordering of connections to quickly find the other end of a connection.
