The Need for Infrastructure Management

Organizations require an IT Infrastructure Management system if they are to provide infrastructure visibility, accurate change control and meet corporate compliance, governance and security requirements. Organizations need the ability to consolidate all infrastructure information in a single, standard repository to ensure accurate and efficient change planning, control, visibility and reporting of the entire physical IT infrastructure. An IT Infrastructure management solution must be highly scalable, global in scope and adaptable to any environment, but it must also be easy and intuitive to use and provide access to information wherever it's required.

Lack of Infrastructure Management Causes Inefficiencies and Potential Downtime

Without a central IT infrastructure management system, such as CableSolve, records are often kept in Excel spreadsheets, Access databases, paper records or stove-pipe vendor systems. This causes what many organizations describe as “XL hell”, when multiple versions of multiple spreadsheets are within an organization and no single central master copy.

Some statistics on what happens without trusted information:

  • The IT Process institute stated in 2006 that “80% of all downtime due to change, 80% of resolution time, figuring out what was changed”
  •  In 2007 Gartner stated that “large organizations experience 20 severity one “system down” events each year with an average of 13 hours and $140k to resolve”
  • In 2008 Quorcirca, found “28% of companies do not know the exact number of servers in the data center”.

From these statistics it’s possible to conclude that a lack of accurate IT Infrastructure Management (which must include change management) will significantly increase organizational risk of downtime and the length of downtime. The CableSolve infrastructure management solution can significantly reduce these risks.

How Can CableSolve Help?

CableSolve can record the entire physical infrastructure, including power and data connectivity and full history information. CableSolve can query assets such as SNMP power devices and WMI servers to provide an up to the minute view of the entire infrastructure. Visual dashboards of capacity and historical trends can present this information in exactly the format required.

Companies that use CableSolve say a key reason they do is their ability to use the information within CableSolve to reduce operational overheads and significantly improve service levels within the management of the infrastructure. Individual users of CableSolve say that having access to the entire database of records in the palm of their hands, literally, means they are more efficient and effective than before.

Emerging Requirements

Data centers are being required by the companies that run them to become more efficient, not just in terms of personnel, but in terms of how efficiently they use energy and space. Reasons for this vary, but include companies wanting to ensure they are ‘green’, but more often than not it is because of the sheer potential for cost savings. In the US for instance, if a 5 megawatt data center could save 10% of its power consumption it would save approximately US$ 400,000; a massive saving and certainly worth investing in a solution that would assist in achieving that. Data center efficiency is measured using a number of metrics including PUE and DCiE. CableSolve can gather the information to identify where inefficient servers exist and calculate data center metrics.

CableSolve is unique. It provides portable management of your entire infrastructure

CableSolve solves the problem of IT infrastructure management. CableSolve combines powerful, feature rich, client, server and web applications with the highly advanced CableSolve data capture handheld. The ability to view and then accurately add and update records on the CableSolve handheld in ‘real time’ when an infrastructure change is made is critical to effective management and control.

Total Visibility

Visibility and Control of the entire IT infrastructure is achievable with CableSolve. With complete visibility, corporations will achieve significant staff efficiencies, far fewer problems with equipment and infrastructure management and fewer outages caused by incorrect change or capacity problems. Ultimately, visibility of information drives greater data center efficiencies leading to a more productive, greener data center.

CableSolve requires no changes to your current physical infrastructure

CableSolve does not require any new or specialist hardware, it is entirely software based. It can query any SNMP or WMI device using its powerful inbuilt scripting language, and with its total configurability it can represent the entire physical IT infrastructure from the structured cabling to the switches, servers and racks. CableSolve can then overlay these physical layer records with gathered information such as power consumption, heat, space and weight information, proving a total view of the infrastructure. CableSolve can also represent and manage anything else that may be within the IT infrastructure such as PABXs, PCs and security systems, recording where they are, their history and what is connected to what.
